Omirin Threatens N500m Defamation Suit Against Accord Candidate, Radio Station

A member of the House of Representatives representing Ijesa South Federal Constituency, Hon. Sanya Omirin, has threatened to institute a N500 million defamation lawsuit against the Accord Party candidate for the constituency, Mr Alaba Popoola, and a radio station based in Osogbo, Osun State, over alleged defamatory statements.

The threat was contained in a letter dated October 27, 2026, issued by Omirin’s solicitors, Alaci Attorneys, over comments allegedly made during the station’s political programme, Oro Oselu.

According to the letter, Popoola allegedly accused the lawmaker of intimidating residents with firearms and involvement in murder following his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The solicitors described the allegations as false and damaging to their client’s reputation. They also expressed concern that the comments could heighten political tension and expose the lawmaker to hostility during the election period.

The law firm reportedly gave Popoola and the radio station a 48-hour ultimatum to retract the alleged statements publicly, issue a video apology on the same programme and across their social media platforms, remove the offending broadcast and grant Omirin an immediate opportunity to respond.

The solicitors warned that failure to comply with the demands could result in a N500 million civil suit over alleged defamation and cyberstalking.

They also threatened to petition the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the police over the matter, as well as lodge a complaint with the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), seeking appropriate regulatory action against the station.

As of the time of filing this report, the responses of Popoola and the radio station to the allegations and the threatened legal action were not included in the information available.
