Four Die, 16 Injured As Container Truck Overturns On Lagos Bridge
Four men have died, while 16 other people sustained serious injuries in a road accident involving a container-laden truck and a Toyota Hiace passenger bus on Berger Bridge along the Ibeju-Lekki Expressway in Lagos State.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday, saying the accident occurred when the truck reportedly lost control while ascending a slope and overturned onto the passenger bus.
According to the agency, emergency responders from its Beta Whales Team arrived at the scene following a distress call, alongside personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigeria Police Force.
The injured victims were given first aid before being transported to Epe General Hospital for medical attention.
LASEMA said heavy-duty cranes were deployed to lift the overturned container and facilitate the rescue of trapped victims. Emergency teams also introduced traffic diversions to ease congestion and ensure the safe clearance of the accident scene.
The agency added that two other truck-related accidents were recorded in different parts of Lagos on the same day.
In Agege, a truck reportedly knocked down a solar-powered streetlight pole before mounting the road median near Vetland School.
Another accident occurred along the Lagos State University (LASU)-Igando axis, where a DAF truck allegedly driving against the flow of traffic collided head-on with a Toyota Corolla, injuring the car’s driver.
The three accident scenes were subsequently cleared by joint emergency response teams.
The Lagos State Government expressed condolences to the families of those who died in the Berger Bridge crash and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.
The government also urged motorists to observe speed limits, avoid dangerous driving and ensure their vehicles were roadworthy before embarking on journeys.
The incidents have renewed concerns over road safety and the dangers associated with reckless driving and the movement of heavy-duty vehicles on Lagos roads.
