Foundation Trains 1,000 People On Adire Design In Ogun
An NGO, Gbagede Ewa Ede Foundation, says all is now set for training no fewer than 1,000 people on Adire textile in Ogun.
The Convener of the foundation, Adejoke Somoye, said at a news conference in Abeokuta on Monday that the training was aimed at empowering the participants and make them self-reliant.
Somoye said that the programme was not only targetted at preserving the indigenous craft but also, to checkmate the fake adire currently flooding the textile market, particularly in Abeokuta.
According to her, the training would hold between Dec. 11 and Dec.13.
“We are delighted to announce the upcoming annual three-in-one event by Gbagede Ewa Ede Foundation, an organisation committed to the revitalisation of Yoruba culture.
“On Dec.15, our annual educational symposium, themed: “Omoluabi is not a Scam,” will take place at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Abeokuta.
“The best Yoruba teacher and student will be recognised and rewarded with N500,000 through our Yoruba language education support fund.
“It is noteworthy that the state Ministry of Education, the government agency responsible, has been engaged to determine the deserving winners.
“On Dec. 17, the foundation will host an exhibition showcasing indigenous adire designs, serving as a counterpoint to the saturated market of China-produced adire fabrics,” she said.
Somoye added that the foundation remained resolute in its vision and commitment to the propagation, preservation and celebration of the Yoruba cultural heritage.
“Our collective efforts are a testament to the belief that positive change starts within our community and we can continue to empower, educate and celebrate our cultural heritage,” she said.
