The Death Of Two Yoruba Kings — By Adedokun Abolarin

Hardly do we celebrate the departure of monarchs in Yorubaland because our belief is that culturally, earthly departure is a continuation of service in the spiritual realm. But for the sake of the greatness of this institution and the future of our people, there is a need for a slight departure.

Two important Yoruba monarchs have recently joined our ancestors:

His Royal Majesty Oba Adeyemi Akanbi Adediran, the Owamiran of Esa-Oke
Kabiyesi was young, dynamic, and purposeful, with total affection for his people of Esa-Oke. Esa-Oke is dear to many of us because it was the proud hometown of our leader, Chief Bola Ige, the former Governor of old Oyo State (1979–1983). Oba Adediran served diligently as a member of the Welfare Committee of the Osun State Council of Obas and was deeply committed to the affairs of Osun State. His reign was marked by wisdom, dignity, and dedication to peace, unity, and development.

His Royal Majesty Oba Adebanji Ajibade Alabi, Afuntade I, the Alawe of Ilawe-Ekiti
Kabiyesi was a young, dynamic, proactive, cerebral, diplomat-turned-monarch of Ilawe. Ilawe-Ekiti is the home of great Yoruba souls. He was totally committed to the development of his people and had passion for Yorubaland and Nigeria. Before ascending the throne in 2012, he served Nigeria for over 25 years as a diplomat, rising to Deputy Director in various foreign missions. He later served as Chairman of the Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers from 2019 to 2021, and his 14-year reign brought remarkable development and unity to Ilawe-Ekiti.

The Lesson

The major lesson is that we are all here for a while. Life is short, and we must serve our people to the best of our abilities while we have the opportunity. May their legacies of service, integrity, and love for their people endure.
