Deputy Senate President And His Prayers On Local Government Autonomy Alli Ibraheem
I don’t want to go natural. If not, I would have blamed and lambasted an elder brother who suffocated his junior brother in the name of superiority. The cheating took me to the old days of autonomous local government administration. It was a good old day when local governments have their financial voice independent. I reminiscenced the bright days when elephant projected are executed by local authorities. It was days of joy, happiness and hope. I remembered the juicy days of hope when elders behave like an elder and allowed younger ones to strive and grow. But what do we have today?
Last week, I watched the presentation of the Deputy Senate President, Distinguished Senator Barau Jibrin CON offering his legislative prayers on the full autonomy for the 774 local government councils of the Federation. It was a promising prayer for you and I. The prayers were meant to free local administrations from aggressive gag of the state powers. The combination of local governments is what made a state and federal government. The closest tier to the government are the local councils. This accounts for why a responsible federal and state governments must concentrate on the financial stability and buoyancy of the local councils. Interestingly, the credits recorded by local councils spread to the advantage of the domiciled state and the federal government.
Two primary prayers were offered by the Distinguished Senator Barau Jibrin. “All states and local governments to fully comply with the recent supreme Court judgement on the disbursement and utilization of funds accrue to all local governments in Nigeria”. The second prayers “Senate ensures authorization to relevant provisions of the Constitution to provide for the full autonomy of the local governments in Nigeria”
I fancy the legislative prowess of Senator Barau Jibrin, since his day at the lower chamber. He is known for his progressive contributions to legislative assignments. Re-engineering and rejuvenating the strength of local affairs should be paramount to any public office holders. Granting local governments autonomy will be a monumental legacy.
I must extend the commendation to the Senate President and the entire 10th Assembly. I hope the state actors will not breach the court pronouncement. I’ve the conviction that the sanctity of the national assembly will be protected by the state actors most of whom may become federal legislators tomorrow.
I’m happier again when I had deep conversations with the Special Assistant to President Ahmed Tinubu on Public Engagement, Moremi Ojudu. He told me her office has been saddled to monitor compliance, disbursement and utilization of local governments fund. Putting effective monitoring machineries in place will expose recalcitrant state authorities and ensure the law takes it due course.
Distinguished Senator Barau Jibrin, your legislative prayers are heard, and granted. You are a symbol of patriotic Nigerians ensures laws are respected and protected.
