BREAKING: NPC Chairman, Aminu Wushishi, Dies Eight Months After Assuming Office

The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr Aminu Yusuf Wushishi, is dead.

Wushishi reportedly died on Friday, August 28, 2026, after a brief illness, barely eight months after assuming office as Chairman of the commission.

News of his death reportedly reached Minna, the Niger State capital, around the time of the Juma’at prayer, throwing his family, associates and political circles into mourning.

His Special Adviser on Media, Stanley Nwosu, confirmed the development.

“Yes, it is true. The NPC chairman died after a brief illness,” Nwosu said.

Wushishi was a prominent figure in Niger State politics and a former Secretary of the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before his appointment to head the National Population Commission.

He was appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and officially assumed office as NPC Chairman on December 2, 2025.

His sudden death comes at a critical period for the commission, which is responsible for generating population and demographic data, coordinating census-related activities and overseeing civil registration in Nigeria.

The commission’s work is considered vital to national planning, policy formulation and development programmes.

Wushishi’s tenure also witnessed efforts to strengthen the country’s digital civil registration system and improve the generation of reliable population data.

The news of his death has continued to generate reactions from political associates and stakeholders across Niger State and beyond.
