Governors Reaffirm Push For State Police, Power Reforms
The governors of Nigeria’s 36 states have reaffirmed their commitment to ongoing power sector reforms and stronger collaboration among stakeholders to expand access to reliable and affordable electricity across the country.
They also reiterated their support for the establishment of state police as part of broader constitutional and governance reforms aimed at strengthening security and improving service delivery.
The resolutions were contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the second meeting of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), held on Wednesday.
During the meeting, the governors deliberated on key national issues, including consultations with state Attorneys-General on proposed constitutional amendments and the legal frameworks required to guide future decisions.
According to the communiqué, the governors stressed that the creation of state police must be constitutionally grounded and consistent with the principles of federalism and the protection of citizens’ rights. The Forum noted that the outcome of consultations would help strengthen the states’ collective position on the matter.
The Forum also received a presentation from the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning on progress made under the National Nutrition 774 (N-774) Initiative, which is aimed at improving nutrition outcomes across the country.
The governors reaffirmed their commitment to tackling child malnutrition and noted ongoing work on the National Nutrition Bill. They encouraged sustained engagement with relevant stakeholders to strengthen the legal and policy framework for nutrition governance.
On the proposed National Solar Super-Grid (NSSG) Initiative, the governors acknowledged its potential to expand electricity access through large-scale decentralised solar generation integrated with a national high-voltage transmission network. They said the project could drive industrialisation, enhance energy security, strengthen state electricity markets and accelerate economic growth.
