A Tribute to a Rare Gem: In Memory of Abiodun Adebayo Adewopo
By Amusan Johnson
Some profound questions crossed my mind this morning when I received the heartbreaking news of the passing of the President of the National Association of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree Accountancy Alumni (NAPAS Alumni), Abiodun Adebayo Adewopo.
How does one write an elegy for a beautiful soul who has just departed this world? How does one mourn a perfect gentleman who freely bestowed love on everyone privileged to encounter him during his short but impactful life? How does one come to terms with the loss of a rare gem whose heart was filled with humanity and compassion? How does one react to the passing of a man who, despite his physical stature and accomplishments, never allowed pride or arrogance to define his relationships with others, irrespective of their status? Can tears truly compensate for the loss suffered by those whose lives were touched by his generosity and philanthropy?
I cannot really answer those questions because the saying that usually rents the air is that God took you away because “We loved you, but God loved you more.”
Today, however, those words offer little comfort. No! God could not have taken you away from us because he loved you more than we loved you. That would amount to wickedness. God must not take a good person in his prime away from those whose problems he was shouldering while alive. So, on your death, I will disagree that God took you away because he loved you more. God can and must never be that wicked!
Abiodun Adebayo Adewopo, your death remains a profound shock to all who knew you. You radiated love wherever you found yourself and touched countless lives with your generosity, humility, and warmth.
Personally, I will never forget my last encounter with you. The award presented to me by your association will forever remain a treasured souvenir and a lasting testament to your leadership, kindness, and belief in others.
Though your earthly journey has ended, your legacy of service, love, and humanity will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing you.
Dear brother, rest peacefully in the bosom of the Almighty. May the Lord comfort and protect your family, preserve your legacy, and sustain all those whose lives you touched.
Farewell, Abiodun Adebayo Adewopo!
