OAU Mourns As 18-Year-Old Part Three Medical Student Dies In His Sleep
The entire community of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of an 18-year-old Part Three student of the Department of Medicine and Surgery, College of Health Sciences.

Timilehin Adetoye Toromade with Matric No: CLI/2022/133), died in his sleep.
The devastating incident occurred on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
According to the Public Relations Officer of the university, Abiodun Olarewaju, in a statement made available to journalists, he described the incident as shocking and devastating to the entire university community.
Preliminary information from the deceased’s roommates suggested that Toromade might have passed away after 2:00 a.m in the morning , as one of them said he had opened the door for one of them at that time.
Reacting to the tragedy, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, expressed deep sorrow over the loss and conveyed unreserved condolences to the bereaved family, classmates and friends.
Professor Bamire also expressed deep grief over the tragedy while speaking on behalf of the Visitor, University Council, Senate, staff, students, alumni and the entire Great Ife community,
“The loss of a young life filled with promise, purpose and potential is a tragedy that words alone cannot adequately capture,” He said.
Professor Bamire described the development as deeply painful and distressing, noting that the late student had embraced the rigours of medical training with the aspiration of, one day, healing others and serving humanity. He added that the passing had left a huge void in the hearts of his peers and lecturers who knew him.
The university assured the public that it was working closely with relevant authorities to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident in line with established medical procedures.
Management further stated that appropriate support measures were being put in place to assist students and staff emotionally affected by the sudden loss.
The institution appealed for calm, compassion and prayers from all stakeholders, urging members of the community to uphold the values of empathy and solidarity for which OAU is renowned
