A political group, Osun Democrats for Democracy (ODD), has refuted claims that Governor Ademola Adeleke is planning to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The group described the defection rumour, which reportedly originated from a group known as the “Osun Voters Assembly,” as baseless and politically motivated.

In a statement signed by its chairman, Alhaji Abdulmaruf Odunlade, and released on Tuesday, the group alleged that the rumour was being peddled by “a faceless and shallow-minded group” seeking to distract the public from the current administration’s achievements.

“Governor Ademola Adeleke is not, will not, and shall never consider joining the All Progressives Congress (APC), nor will he seek its ticket to contest any election in Osun or elsewhere,” Odunlade said.

He added that the governor had repeatedly declared his unwavering commitment to the PDP and had no intention of aligning with the APC.

ODD linked the rumour to internal crisis within the Osun APC, accusing members of the opposition party of attempting to discredit Adeleke’s rising political profile and the policies of his administration.

“The nonsense being pushed out by the so-called Osun Voters Assembly is nothing but a regurgitation of falsehoods orchestrated by elements within the shattered ranks of the Osun APC,” the group stated.

It added that Governor Adeleke, who was elected on the PDP platform, had introduced reforms focused on transparency, infrastructural revival, workers’ welfare, and youth inclusion.

“Why would such a performing leader abandon the very party that has given Osun hope, just to join a morally bankrupt opposition?” the statement queried.

The group also advised those circulating the rumour to “stop insulting the intelligence of Osun people,” while urging residents to continue supporting the current government.

The rumour of Adeleke’s possible defection has sparked discussion across social media platforms in recent days. However, neither the governor nor his official aides have responded publicly to the claim as of press time.

Governor Adeleke, who assumed office in November 2022, is currently serving his first term.
