Experts Harp On Accurate Data For National Planning

Dr. Oyetunde Olasumboye, the head of the Monitoring and Evaluation unit of the Osun State Ministry of Health, has emphasized the importance of a data-driven approach in planning and implementing various interventions across sectors in the country.

Speaking at a media roundtable meeting with family planning stakeholders to commemorate the 2024 World Population Day, sponsored by The Challenge Initiative (TCI) and DevComs, Olasumboye, who was the guest speaker, noted that data plays a crucial role in bridging inequity gaps, ensuring social inclusion, and fostering a progressive economy.

Olasumboye, who spoke on “Embracing the Power of Inclusive Data Towards a Resilient and Equitable Future for All,” highlighted the significance of data in decision-making processes at the national, state, and local government levels.

He explained that data helps identify the specific needs of different communities, allowing for better resource allocation and targeted interventions.

In the context of family planning, Olasumboye pointed out that data can reveal communities with low uptake of contraceptives, enabling the government to focus more resources on those areas. This approach ensures that interventions are tailored to the needs of the most vulnerable populations.

Olasumboye further emphasized the importance of data in evaluating the effectiveness of interventions, stating, “When you start implementation, you monitor it with data so that you can assess your progress and identify areas that need improvement. By using data at every stage of planning and implementation, governments can make informed decisions and maximize the impact of their interventions.”

He advocated for data-driven distribution of government resources and interventions, particularly in times of crisis, saying that by prioritizing the needs of the most vulnerable populations, governments can ensure that resources reach those who need them the most. He acknowledged the challenges posed by the current economic situation but stressed that a data-driven approach can help alleviate the impact on the most affected individuals and communities.

In her remarks, Dr. Adebusola Oyeyemi, TCI State Manager, said accurate statistics would assist the government in planning for its citizens. Represented by TCI Demand Generation State Technical Lead, Mr. Daniel Oluwafunso, she noted that by prioritizing family planning, the nation can better allocate resources and mitigate issues such as crime, poverty, and maternal mortality. She added that overpopulation has been identified as a significant contributor to various socioeconomic problems in Nigeria, including increased crime rates.

Also speaking, the family planning coordinator in the state, Mrs. Ololade Abatan, emphasized the vital role of media professionals in raising awareness and providing accurate information on family planning, its benefits, and the importance of making informed decisions. She stressed the need to dispel misconceptions and rumors surrounding family planning to increase its acceptance among the general population.

According to Abatan, family planning is essential for maintaining healthy living and preventing population explosion. Proper planning enables individuals and families to meet their needs, ensure the well-being of mothers and children, and contribute to a healthier society. She explained that by protecting women from unplanned pregnancies, family planning helps reduce maternal morbidity and mortality as well as infant mortality.
