Justice Haleemah Salman of the Kwara State High Court has sentenced five suspects involved in the notorious 2018 Offa bank robbery to death.

The convicts were found guilty of charges including illegal possession of firearms, armed robbery, and culpable homicide.

The judge while delivering the judgement said the incident which resulted in the deaths of 33 people, including police officers and civilians, were punishable by death under Nigerian law.

It would be recalled that the tragic event occurred in April 2018, when the gang of robbers attacked several banks in Offa, Kwara State, and engaged in a brutal shooting spree that left the town in shock.

The court held that the evidence against the five suspects was overwhelming, linking them directly to the criminal acts.

The ruling brings closure to a case that has haunted the victims’ families and the Offa community for over five years.

The robbers were also implicated in the theft of substantial amounts of money from the banks during the heist.

Justice Salman noted that the death penalty was in line with the law for such heinous crimes, stressing the severity of the offences and their impact on society.
