IGP Idris Allegedly Blames Herdsmen/Farmers Clashes On Anti-grazing

IGP Idris has allegedly called for the suspension of anti-grazing law

The IGP allegedly said the anti-grazing law should be put on hold until government can provide ranches The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris during his meeting with a Senate committee on Friday, suggested that states with anti-grazing law be ordered to suspend the law until ranches can be provided for herdsmen. Idris reportedly blamed the clashes between herdsmen and farmers on the anti-grazing law when he appeared in front of the senate on Friday.

A source of The Cable, who attended the meeting said the IGP claimed that 100 people have been arrested in connection with the killings in Benue state and suspects have been charged to court. The source said: “He (IGP) said the anti-grazing law is the issue and that it should be stopped temporarily but brought back after the ranches have been put in place by the federal government.

“He blamed the escalation of the clashes on the implementation of the anti-grazing law.” The source added that IGP Idris expressed worry over the presence of armed militias across the state.

The IG also cautioned commissioners of police against indiscriminate approval of vigilance groups in their commands. Idris gave the warning at the monthly meeting with commissioners of police and above on Thursday in Abuja. Naij.com
