The Kwara state Ministry of Environment is embarking on continuous dredging and desilting of waterways to curb the menace of seasonal flooding as a result of the indiscriminate disposal of waste in the state.

The floodplain claimed a number of lives last year during the fall season as plastic wastes and other related sewage blocked the waterways, leading to flooding which accounted for loss of properties worth millions even as many residents were rendered homeless due to the damage the flooding caused to the buildings.

In view of the above, the state Commissioner of Environment, Arc Saifudeen Aliyu said Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq directed that his Ministry should work out modalities to solve the problem of flooding in the state, a development that has threatened residents and was fast becoming a trend across the state.

Residents who spoke to newsmen applauded Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his commitment to providing solutions to many of the challenges facing the populace especially during this period when the rains are expected to come in volumes.

Only few days ago damages as a result of flooding in Oke-Erin happened, a suburban area of Ilorin, claiming lives. The indiscriminate dumping of refuse across the state has contributed in no small measure to the high numbers of flooding incidents recorded recently.

Arc. Saifudeen Aliyu advised citizens to take responsibility and dispose their refuse properly to avoid flooding, whose danger he said is grave as experienced in the past.
