Osun Chief Whip, Olatunji Celebrates Women On International Women’s Day
The Chief Whip of Osun House Assembly, Hon Tunde Olatunji has felicitated with Nigeria women on the celebration of the International Women’s Day.
In a statement in Osogbo, Mr Olatunji salutes the creativity, doggedness and sacrifices of the women folk in the promotion and sustenance of peaceful co existence of the society.
He argued that women had inherent capacity to contribute to the domestic and national economy if properly empowered.
The Osun Assembly Whip charged Nigeria leaders that the celebration of this year’s women’s Day should provoke further reflection how well the state has protected and preserved the rights of women, particularly the rural women.
The legislator noted ” As we speak in the 21st century, the rights of women in Nigeria still suffer acute infringement, from sexual violence, economic right, to social right, right of hereditary and all manners of discrimination that are basically gender inclined”.
“There is no doubting the fact that the society was historically organised to make women subservient in all forms, however the trend from 20th century has suggested promotion of gender respect and equality is a win-win for mankind as the capacity of women manifesting in an atmosphere of freedom compliments that of men to keep the world prosperous and peaceful “.
Mr Olatunji argued that the state had a big role to play in promoting equality among all human beings, irrespective of their gender, by promulgating and enforcing appropriate policies that address the burning issues.
He called for compulsory adult education programme in rural communities so as to raise the awareness of women, as he insisted that education was key to the elimination of harmful traditional practises against women.
