Police Arraign Driver For ‘Reckless Driving’, Crushing Of 15-Yr-Old Boy To Death In Osun

A 63-year-old driver, Samuel Olujimi, was on Thursday arraigned before an Osogbo Magistrates’ Court for allegedly causing the of death of a 15-year-old boy in Osogbo.

He was accused of dangerous and reckless driving on the highway which according to the charge led to the death of the secondary schools boy from C. A. C middle school, Osogbo
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Oladoye Joshua told the court that the defendant committed the offense on March 12, 2018 at about 4.10pm at Ayegbaju International Market, Ogo-Oluwa area, Osogbo.
Joshua said the accused drove his vehicle dangerously agsinst the traffic and to the detriment of the general public.
He explained that the accused being the driver in charge of Honda Pilot Jeep with REG number Lagos JJJ243EF drove dangerously leading to the deatof Afeez Samad of C. A. C Middle School in Osogbo.
He said the offence was contrary to Section 18(1) of RTR cap 113 vol. 5 Laws of Osun State 2003 and punishable under Section 27 of the RTA Cap 115 vol 6 layws of Osun State 2003.
The accused person however pleaded not guilty to the allegations leveled against him.
The Defense counsel, Barrister I. O Adeniran prayed the court to grant his client bail in the most liberal terms.
Adeniran, who said the accused was still presumed innocent until contrary is proved by a court of law, saying the incident was caused by the break failure and not done intentionally.
He further explained that the accused was brought to court to fulfill legal requirements in the case and urged the court to grant him bail on self recognition.
The magistrate Mrs O. A Oloyade granted the defendant bail in the sum of 500,000 with two sureties. She said sureties must be residents within the court jurisdiction, sworn to affidavit of means and provide evidence of tax payments and three passports photographs.
The case was adjourned till May 24, 2018 for hearing.
