FG Seeks Collective Action On Teachers’ Welfare
The federal government has reiterated the need to collectively address the welfare of teachers and called for more support to enable them meet the 21st Century demands.
The minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu made the call yesterday in Abuja on the commemoration of the World Teachers ‘ Day which is celebrated worldwide annually on the 5th of October as initiated by UNESCO in 1994.
Addressing newsmen on the theme: “Teaching in Freedom, Empowering Teachers, “ Adamu said teachers deserved to be celebrated for their great role in nation-building.
“Teachers are therefore, the guiding light in a dark world and the providers of hope for the future of any nation. Let me reiterate that without teachers’ total dedication and commitment to their calling, a nation could be wandering in the dark.”
Also speaking, the national president of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Comrade Michael Alogba Olukoya appreciated President Muhammadu Buhari for the sustenance of the President’s Teachers and Schools Excellence Award which has given a sense of honour to teachers in the country.
He commended Nigerian teachers for their resourcefulness, dedication and resilience in carrying out their professional tasks.
“I salute them for their passion in their chosen profession and their sacrifice and courage in keeping the flag flying despite obvious odds against their calling. “In Nigeria, the main activities earmarked to commemorate the 2017 World Teachers Day on Thursday, 5th October will include a march past by teachers, presentation of the President’s Teachers and Schools Excellence Award and other activities.
