NGO Advises Nigerians On Regular Medical Check Up

A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), has advised Nigerians to do regular exercise and medical check-up in order to prevent deadly non communicable diseases.

The Coordinator, Ifedoyin and Friends Charity Organisation, Miss Ifedoyin Olatunbosun gave the charge at the weekend in Akure, the state capital after a Charity Health Walk, tagged: “No to High Blood Pressure and Diabetes”.

Olatunbosun said a lifestyle of regular exercise and medical check-up was important, no matter the kind of undertaking or occupation one was engaged in.

According to her, the group organised the walk to sensitise the public on the need to live a healthy lifestyle due to the high prevalence of sudden death arising from stroke, hypertension, diabetes among others.

She said that the organisation would also screen members of the public for high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV/AIDS and body mass index.

Olatubosun disclosed that members of the organisation, had earlier donated drugs and other items to inmates of Ago Ireti Leprosarium in Akure.

She said she got to know about the community when her late father was posted to the community as a pharmacist years back and had since promised to support the settlement.

Her words, “We have been to many states apart from Lagos State; my father inspired me to begin an NGO and told me not to forget this community.

“We did not receive help from government or anybody; what we donated here was what my friends and I contributed.

“It is good that people do check up their body generally, because most of these diseases are preventable if detected early and that is why we are doing this”.

In his own statement, a leader in Ago-Ireti community, Mr. Tunji Oluwatimileyin thanked the organisation for its consideration to support the less privileged in the community.

Oluwatimileyin also called on the government to review the monthly stipend of N10,000 per head currently being given to members of the community describing the amount as inadequate in view of the present economic reality in the country.
