Aiyedatiwa Probes Death Of Mother Of Quintuplets In Akure
Ondo State Government, under the leadership of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has launched an investigation into the death of a 45-year-old woman, Mary Yaduyan, who died hours after giving birth to quintuplets at a hospital in Akure.
This is even as the state government announced a ₦2 million donation to support the care of the five newborn boys delivered through a caesarean section at Netcare Multispeciality Hospital.
Medical experts reportedly attributed the woman’s death to pulmonary embolism, a complication that occurred shortly after childbirth.
During a visit to the hospital on Saturday, the Governor, represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Seun Osamaye, described the incident as heartbreaking.
He said, “His administration remains committed to safeguarding the lives of pregnant women and ensuring that no effort is spared in caring for these babies.”
She explained that the ₦2 million support was aimed at providing immediate relief for the newborns, while the government also considers long-term welfare plans for them, including possible transfer to a specialised medical facility when stable.
Osamaye stressed the need for improved monitoring of high-risk pregnancies and urged hospitals to prioritise timely referrals in cases requiring specialist attention.
“This tragedy highlights the urgent need for proactive interventions in high-risk pregnancies,” she added.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Adiji Ojohe, confirmed that the ministry had commenced a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
“The Ministry of Health has set the necessary machinery in motion to unravel the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate development,” Ojohe stated.
“Appropriate actions will follow the outcome of the investigation to enhance maternal healthcare delivery and prevent future occurrences.”
