INEC Redeploys Osun REC Mutiu Agboke Ahead of 2026 Governorship Preparations
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially redeployed the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Osun State, Mutiu Agboke, to Ondo State, marking a significant administrative shift as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2026 governorship election in Osun.
Agboke disclosed his redeployment in a message shared on the official Osun INEC WhatsApp platform late Wednesday.
In the message, he expressed deep appreciation to staff members and stakeholders for their cooperation and support throughout his tenure in the state.
“I have been transferred to Ondo State. I thank you most sincerely for the support given to me throughout my stay here in Osun State. May God Almighty support you all as well,” he stated.
The development comes at a crucial period when preparations are beginning to gather momentum for the next electoral cycle in Osun State. Observers believe that such administrative reshuffling is part of INEC’s broader strategy to ensure neutrality, efficiency, and preparedness ahead of major elections.
Before his departure, Agboke held a crucial stakeholders’ meeting on Tuesday with representatives from several local government areas, including Ife North, Ife Central, Ife East, Atakunmosa West, Ilesa East, and Ilesa West. The meeting focused on evaluating ongoing electoral processes and addressing challenges affecting election administration.
During the engagement, Agboke clarified that the suspension of the voter revalidation exercise was a directive from INEC’s national headquarters. He emphasized that the decision must be respected and implemented by all stakeholders without exception.
He further highlighted the importance of collaboration among electoral bodies, political actors, and the electorate in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process. According to him, such engagements are vital for fostering transparency, building trust, and ensuring that concerns from grassroots participants are adequately captured.
The interactive session provided an opportunity for stakeholders to voice their concerns and share firsthand experiences regarding past electoral exercises. Among the major issues raised were low voter turnout, logistical constraints, and inadequate security arrangements during elections.
Participants stressed the need for improved voter education to boost participation, especially among young and first-time voters. They also called for better planning and distribution of electoral materials to avoid delays and disruptions on election day.
Security challenges were another key concern, with stakeholders urging INEC and relevant agencies to strengthen coordination in order to guarantee the safety of voters, electoral officials, and materials during future polls.
Agboke acknowledged these concerns and reiterated INEC’s commitment to continuous improvement. He noted that feedback from such meetings plays a critical role in shaping policies and operational strategies for upcoming elections.
The redeployment of Agboke is seen as part of INEC’s routine administrative adjustments, aimed at maintaining institutional integrity and preventing over-familiarity that could compromise the credibility of the electoral process.
As Osun State gradually moves closer to the 2026 governorship election, political observers and stakeholders alike will be watching closely to see how these preparatory steps influence the overall conduct and credibility of the polls.
INEC’s ongoing efforts, including stakeholder engagement and strategic redeployments, underscore its determination to deliver transparent, free, and fair elections across the country.
