Breaking: INEC Fixes Dates For 2027 General Elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed February 20, 2027, for the conduct of Nigeria’s next presidential and National Assembly elections.
Chairman of the commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, announced the timetable on Friday during a press conference in Abuja. He also revealed that governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections across the country will take place on March 6, 2027.
The announcement comes amid ongoing discussions at the National Assembly over the amendment of the Electoral Act. Concerns have been raised about the delay in passing the revised legislation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Earlier, on February 4, INEC indicated that it had finalised its election timetable and schedule of activities despite the pending amendment to the Electoral Act. The commission disclosed that it had already submitted the schedule to lawmakers.
However, INEC cautioned that certain aspects of the planned activities could be adjusted depending on when the amended Electoral Act is eventually passed into law.
