Lions Club Urges Residents To Use Government-Certified Hospital

– Donates Medical Materials, Consumables

The President of the Osun New Era Lions Club, Lion Engineer Oyewale Oyesiji, has urged citizens to prioritize their health adding that cleanliness and regular medical check-ups are essential to healthy living

Oyesiji, stressed that no one should be too busy to know his or her health status, warning that seeking medical care from uncertified centres can be dangerous.

He urged the public to always patronise government-accredited health facilities staffed with qualified and certified health personnel.

He made this call on Wednesday during a community outreach programme organised by the Osun New Era Lions Club at the Primary Health Centre, Isale Agbara, osogbo, Osun state, where the club donated medical materials to support healthcare delivery and also carried out sensitisation on childhood (paediatric) cancer.

According to Oyesiji, the intervention was informed by the prevailing economic situation in the country and the need to complement government efforts in providing quality healthcare at the grassroots level.

“People should avoid seeking medical care in uncertified centres, as this can be detrimental to their health. It is important to always patronise government-accredited health facilities where trained and certified personnel are available to take proper care of patients.”

“Health is wealth, and it is something that must be of utmost priority. Cleanliness and regular medical check-ups are essential to healthy living. No matter how busy we are, we should always make time to know our health status.” he said.

Items donated to the health centre include bedsheets, pillowcases, toiletries, disinfectants such as Dettol, methylated spirit, cotton wool, gloves, detergents, and other basic hospital consumables required for patient care.

As part of the programme, members of the club also engaged pregnant women attending antenatal care at the facility, educating them on childhood cancer, personal hygiene, environmental cleanliness, and the importance of early detection of diseases.

Speaking on the initiative, Lion Ayodeji Osundiran, Club Service Activity Chairperson for the 2025/2026 Lions Year, explained that the club undertakes monthly community service projects aimed at impacting the lives of vulnerable and underserved members of society.

Osundiran said the focus for the month was paediatric cancer awareness, noting that while the disease may not be completely eradicated, increased sensitisation and early detection could significantly reduce its impact.

“As part of our culture, we engage in community service every month to impact the lives of the vulnerable, the needy, and the less privileged. This month, our focus is paediatric cancer awareness.”

Osundiran added that the Lions Club is also involved in other health-related interventions, including diabetes awareness, eye care programmes, and sanitation initiatives, stressing that information and awareness remain powerful tools in disease prevention.

Also speaking, Bukola Kafayat Afolabi, Treasurer of the Osun New Era Lions Club, said the Isale Agbara Primary Health Centre was selected due to the large number of community members who access the facility.

“We selected the Isale Agbara Primary Health Centre because many people access this facility daily. The materials we donated will reach a lot of people and make a positive impact on the community.” she stated

Afolabi noted that the donated materials would reach many beneficiaries and have a positive impact, adding that the club continues to identify areas of need within communities and respond accordingly.

“The government cannot do everything alone, so the little support we are able to provide as a club will go a long way in assisting the people.”

Afolabi also appreciated members of the Lions Club for their commitment and contributions, recalling that the club had previously donated sanitary pads to a primary school in Ede as part of its community outreach efforts.

Receiving the items on behalf of the health facility, Mrs Adesina Elizabeth, Officer-in-Charge of the Isale Agbara Primary Health Centre, expressed gratitude to the Lions Club for the gesture.

She described the facility as a primary healthcare centre serving the grassroots and commended the club for supporting patients who may be unable to afford basic hospital items.

According to her, the health centre operates 24 hours daily to meet the healthcare needs of the community, assuring residents that trained personnel are always available to provide assistance.

“We sincerely appreciate the Lions Club for this donation. These items will greatly assist our patients, especially those who cannot afford to buy some basic hospital materials”. Adesina said.

She said the donated materials would ease the burden on patients and further encouraged members of the community to take advantage of the services available at the centre.

“This primary health centre operates 24 hours a day to serve the community. With these donated items now available, more people can come and receive the care they need.” She noted.
