‘Oba of Benin Stoops Low’, Obaseki Condemns Abduction Of Cousin

Former Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has condemned the abduction of his cousin, Dr Pedro Obaseki, describing the incident as an act that shows the Oba of Benin had “stooped low” by allegedly allowing the palace to be linked to such violence.

Dr Pedro Obaseki was reportedly attacked and abducted at gunpoint by armed thugs at Uwa Primary School in Benin City before being taken away against his will.

In a statement on Monday, Obaseki said the attack was a violent and unlawful ac allegedly carried out by thugs acting under the instructions of the palace of the Oba of Benin, adding that he was shocked and deeply disturbed by the development.

“I strongly condemn the violent attack, maiming and abduction of my cousin, Dr Pedro Obaseki, by armed thugs who are said to be acting under instructions of the palace of the Oba of Benin,” he said.

Dr Pedro Obaseki, a former Managing Director of DAAR Communications and a renowned journalist, was reportedly assaulted, intimidated and tortured by the armed men before being forcefully taken to the palace. A video circulating on social media shows the brutalised victim, partially stripped of his clothing, being escorted to the palace, where some chiefs were seen receiving the group.

Sources said the thugs were awaiting further instructions from the Oba of Benin before Dr Obaseki’s release.

Reacting further, Godwin Obaseki described the incident as a grave violation of fundamental human rights and a blatant disregard for the rule of law, lamenting that the palace was allegedly involved in what he termed a barbaric and shameful act.

“I am surprised that our monarch would stoop so low and allow his hands to be soiled in such an ignoble act. This is not only embarrassing but deeply troubling,” he said, calling on security agencies to immediately investigate the matter and ensure that all those responsible are held accountable.
