Akinlalu killings: OCSC Calls for Suspension of Amotekun Operations in Osun
By David Ojo
The Osun Civil Societies Coalition has called for the immediate suspension of Amotekun operations in Osun state, following the incident in Akinlalu town on 30th September.
In a statement released on Thursday and signed by the coalition’s chairman, Waheed Lawal, he demanded that the operation be suspended, and that all those involved in the killings be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Waheed condemned the actions of the operation in Akinlalu, describing it as reckless, unlawful and barbaric.
He also criticised the Directorate of State Security (DSS) and the Osun State Police Command, faulting them for not taking necessary measures to prevent the incident and failing to contain the unrest promptly.
In his words, “We hold the Directorate of State Security (DSS) and the Osun State Police Command responsible for failing to prevent or promptly contain this violence. Their failure to gather intelligence, detect threats and act swiftly amounts to gross negligence and complicity. Security agencies must not abdicate their constitutional responsibilities.”
The OCSC chairman further expressed his displeasure with the Osun State Government, holding them accountable for their delayed response to the carnage.
He added, “This tragedy happened under the watch of the Osun State Government. The delayed and reactive response of government, including the announcement of an investigation Four days after public outcry, is unacceptable, insensitive and irresponsible.
The OCSC holds Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration accountable for the security failure that allowed this carnage.”
The Coalition demanded adequate compensation for the deceased’s family, pressing for a thorough and transparent investigation as well as operational reforms.
According to the statement, “We demand adequate compensation for families of the deceased and victims of the attack, pursuant to Section 314 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (2015).
“Public release of investigation findings within seven (7) days to ensure transparency.
“Urgent reforms in Amotekun to enforce human rights compliance, improve training standards, and establish community oversight mechanisms.”
They affirmed that they will not take a moment of rest until justice is served, calling on the support of the media and security institutions in the country.
