Edo NANS Demands Action Against AAU Lecturer Accused Of Rape
The National Association of Nigerian Students, Joint Campus Council, Edo State, has appealed to the management of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, and the Nigeria Police not to sweep under the carpet alleged rape allegations against a lecturer in the institution.
The appeal was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the Edo NANS chairman, Ojumoola Timileyin, in which the lecturer, Okoromi Abhasebhor, of the Department of Mathematics, AAU, was accused of having raped a minor food vendor, Vera Sunday, in the institution on Monday, July 7, 2025.
The aunt of the victim confirmed her age to be 16.
Timileyin condemned the alleged rape and said NANS was demanding the suspension of the lecturer.
He said: “With utmost dismay, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) wishes to condemn in the strongest terms the alleged rape of a minor food vendor by one Mr Okoromi Abhasebhor, a lecturer of the Department of Mathematics, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma.
“According to her aunt, the said girl is 16 years of age, which makes her a minor within the ambit of the law.
“The incident, which took place on Monday, July 7, 2025, was said to have occurred in the lecturer’s office during working hours. The said girl was allegedly sent on an errand by her aunt to deliver a food package ordered by another lecturer within the faculty when this sexually untamed and uncultured element of a lecturer descended forcefully on her, according to her.
“Reports obtained from the hospital immediately this incident occurred showed proof of penetration. While it has been confirmed that the girl is not a student of the university, NANS, as the apex student body, is worried and concerned about the already established fact that we have a monster within the ranks of those we are learning from.
“We are immediately calling on the university authority and the police to ensure that no stone is left unturned in bringing this notorious sexual element to justice.
“We demand the immediate condemnation and suspension of the said lecturer by the university management so as to serve as a deterrent to others within the next 48 hours.”
In a query by the acting Registrar of the institution, Ephraim Isiraojie, dated Wednesday, July 9, 2025, and addressed to Abhasebhor, the institution gave the lecturer 48 hours to explain why disciplinary action should not be taken against him for the alleged act of gross misconduct.
The query read: “The university management is in receipt of a security report of an alleged case of rape against you on one Vera Sunday, a food vendor in the Faculty of Physical Sciences, on July 7, 2025.
“It was also alleged that you brought out bundles of money and begged her not to tell anybody, but the victim refused and made a report to her aunt.
“The security report also states that the victim was sent to Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital for medical examinations, and the results show that there was forceful penetration into her vagina.
“In view of the foregoing, you are required to explain within 48 hours, through the Head of Department and Dean of your Faculty, why disciplinary action should not be taken against you for this alleged act of gross misconduct.”
The spokesman of the Edo State Police Command, Moses Yamu, while confirming the incident, said the case was initially reported to the Iruekpen Police Division but has since been transferred to the state CID, adding that a discreet investigation is ongoing.
“The case was first reported at the Iruekpen Police Division but has since been transferred to the state CID for discreet investigation,” he said.
