Sunday Akere: Oyetola Lost 2022 Guber Election Due To Internal Political Manipulation

A former Commissioner for Information and Strategy in Osun State, Hon. Sunday Akere, has claimed that former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola lost the 2022 governorship election due to internal political manipulations within the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Akere emphasized that Oyetola’s defeat was not a result of his unpopularity, but rather because certain influential individuals believed that removing him would hinder Bola Tinubu’s path to the presidency.

Akere made this assertion during the 41st edition of The Frontliners, organized by the League of Veteran Journalists in Osogbo on Thursday.

Akere, who is also a member of the Governing Council of Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State said: “Today in Osun State, Adegboyega Oyetola has the first right of review. We lost the 2022 election due to political manipulations from the party leaders.

The loss was not because we lacked popularity but because certain powers believed that Oyetola had to be dealt with to prevent Tinubu from becoming President.”

He further predicted that the 2026 governorship election would see Oyetola defeating the incumbent Governor, Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), decisively.

“Oyetola, contesting in 2026, will defeat the PDP hands down,” he stated.

Akere also defended Oyetola’s relationship with the civil servants in the state, stressing that during his tenure, salaries were consistently paid, and there were no protests from students.

“Oyetola was never the enemy of civil servants. Throughout his administration, there wasn’t a single protest from students. He paid bursaries without making noise about it,” Akere remarked.

He criticized the Adeleke administration for what he described as wastefulness and insincerity in handling state resources.

“Are we comparing what Osun State was earning under Oyetola to what Adeleke is earning now? What Adeleke has taken in 23 months is what Oyetola received in 48 months.

“The quality of jobs is incomparable. We built the Olaiya Flyover for N2.9 billion, and now they are constructing a similar flyover at Okefia for N10 billion. Almost all their roads are already deteriorating. The roads built during Baba Bisi Akande’s tenure as governor are still intact today.”

Akere also questioned the proposed cost of N19 billion for the Ile-Ife Flyover, suggesting that if N9 billion were used to repair all the roads in Ile-Ife, it would significantly improve the town.
