Breaking: FG Postpones Inauguration Of Governing Councils Of Tertiary Institutions

The Federal government has postponed the inauguration and retreat for the newly appointed members of governing councils of tertiary institutions earlier scheduled to hold later this week.

This may not be unconnected from the protest from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), describing the newly elected council as illegal, after issuing an ultimatum to the government to constitute the board or risk another industrial action.

The union however clarified that its concern was the disbandment of the previous governing councils whose tenure had not elapsed before they were removed.

However, a statement signed by
Director Press & PR of the Ministry of Education, Folasade Boriowo on Monday in Abuja, said the postponement was due to the directive from President Bola Tinubu that members of the newly elected councils be reviewed.

It reads: “The Federal Ministry of Education regrets to announce the postponement of the Inauguration and Retreat for Pro-Chancellors, Chairmen and Members of Governing Councils of Federal Tertiary Institutions, earlier scheduled for Thursday, 30th and Friday, 31st May 2024.

“This is as a result of the Presidential directive, as conveyed by the State House Press Release dated 23rd May 2024, for a comprehensive review of the membership of the Governing Councils of Federal Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria.”

“We regret any inconveniences this may cause. Further updates will be communicated in due course. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.”
