NYSC-FRSC Group Sensitises Motorists, Traders, Others On Traffic Rules
By Wumi Ajibogun, Osogbo
Youth corps members serving with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Community Development group Thursday organised a road walk to sensitise traders and road users in Osogbo, Osun State capital, on traffic rules and regulations.
The sensitisation walk took the corp members around Orisunbare, Oja Oba markets as well as Aregb and Oja Oba motor-parks.
Speaking with CityMirrorNews reporters, the president, FRSC Community Development Service (CDS), Aremu Ezekiel, said the CDS group was a tier of the FRSC with the mandate of enlightening and sensitising road users to ways of effectively using the road.
Ezekiel said the road walk was in line with the mandate of the group to sensitise drivers, commuters as well as traders on the various road ethics and the need to inculcate discipline on the highways.
He said they sensitised traders on the need to desist from the attitude of displaying wares by the roadside.
According to him, the group made the market men and women realized the danger posed by the act, adding that many have lost their lives to road accidents usually caused by the vehicle break failure.
He said: “We told them that displaying wares on the road at times, impede the free flow of vehicular movement.
“We also urged them not to be jaywalkers. Jaywalker is someone who walks across a street at a place where it is not allowed or without taking care to avoid the traffic.
“We also charged them on the need to always take good care of their children who followed them to the market.
“We implored the traders to take precautions and maintain the setback for motorist to have the enough space whenever passengers wanted to alight from the vehicle.
“We also sensitises drivers to the ills of speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, importance of wearing seat belts while driving and shun overloading.
“If the road ethics are imbibed by drivers, cases of road crashes would be minimised on the highways,’’ he said.
The NYSC Road Safety Club is a Community Development Programme for corps members who opt for the CDS during their service year.
It is a partnership programme between the FRSC and NYSC.
