RCCG Protests In Osun Over Killing Of Deborah, As Soyinka Calls For Arrest, Prosecution Of Abuja Chief Imam

Members of the Redeem Christian Church of God Liberation Cathedral Osogbo on Sunday staged a peaceful protest against the killing of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, Deborah Samuel by some people they described as extremists on allegation of blasphemy.

Members of the Church who thronged the church premises located around Adejumo street, Osogbo condemned the brutal killing of the deceased calling on the concerned authorities to work towards averting the reoccurrence of such heart-touching incident in the future.

Armed with the placards with various inscription such as “Let’s be our Brother’s keepers”, “Don’t Defend Undefendable”, Let’s Live Together in Peace”, “No killing in the Name of God”, “God is Watching”, among others.


Speaking with newsmen Pastor Felix Afe Jonson, Pastor in charge of Province 10 said they staged the peaceful protest to let the whole world know that they did not support the gruesome murder of the innocent girl.

His words ” We came out today in large numbers to let the people know that will against the jungle justice meted out to the innocent lady . We vehemently condemned that of blood-sheding and all manners of killings in Nigeria.We must be our brothers keeper and learn how to tolorete each other region for interest of peace.

“No religion promote violence, all religion preaches peace and as such we must demonstrate that peace and love for one another”.

“We were asked to do a peaceful protest to let everybody knows that we are not in support of the murdering of that young girl in Sokoto state and also we are not in support of blood-sheding and all forms of Killings in Nigeria.

“Everybody should just keep to his or her own religious practice. Christians should not dabble into Islamic affairs either should Muslims be dabbled into Christian affairs since we are all pursuing the same goals which is nothing but peace. Religious is actually to guide us for good Governance since

“Religion is to guild us for good governance if we don’t behave as good leaders that mean we are not religiously empowered”. he stated

Recall that Deborah Samuel, a student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto was gruesomely killed by some people they described as extremists on allegation of blasphemy.

It will be recalled that Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has called for the immediate sack of the Chief Imam of Abuja National Mosque, Professor Ibrahim Maqari Yakub, over his comment on the death of Deborah Samuel for alleged blasphemy by her colleagues at the College of Education, Sokoto.

Soyinka spoke during the one-year remembrance of the late former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, organised by his Foundation, Soyinka accused the Islamic cleric of directing his followers to take the law into their hands in the name of religion with his statement

He lamented the resort to lynching people in the name of religion, calling for the end to such barbaric acts in the country.
