Osun@35: NUJ Urges Government To Renew Commitment To Comprehensive Development

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Osun State Council, has congratulated the government and people of Osun State on the 35th anniversary of the creation of the state, calling for renewed commitment to inclusive and sustainable development.

The union, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Comrade Adeyemi Aboderin, and Secretary, Comrade Olalekan Akindoju, described the anniversary as an important milestone that should provide an opportunity for the people to reflect on the state’s journey, celebrate its achievements and confront the challenges hindering its development.

Osun State was created on August 27, 1991, from the old Oyo State.

The NUJ noted that in the past 35 years, Osun had established itself as an important component of Nigeria’s political, economic, cultural and social landscape, with significant contributions from its human capital, rich cultural heritage, agricultural potential and resilient population.

The union commended successive administrations and acknowledged the contributions of traditional rulers, public servants, organised labour, civil society organisations, business owners, professionals and residents to the growth and stability of the state since its creation.

The NUJ also highlighted the critical role played by journalists in documenting Osun’s history and development, noting that the media had consistently served as the eyes and ears of the people by reporting government policies and activities, exposing shortcomings, celebrating achievements and giving voice to citizens.

The union paid tribute to journalists who contributed to the development of journalism and the state but had since passed away, describing their dedication, courage and commitment to the profession as an enduring part of Osun’s heritage.

According to the union, the media remains an indispensable pillar of democracy and should therefore be given the necessary access and support to perform its constitutional responsibility effectively.

It called for a stronger and more constructive partnership between the government and the media, stressing that such collaboration would promote transparency, accountability, good governance and effective communication between the government and the people.

The NUJ equally urged citizens to take greater interest in governance, participate actively in democratic processes, protect public property and reject violence, misinformation and other acts capable of undermining peace and development in the state.

The union said the next 35 years should mark a new phase of purposeful development in which Osun moves from potential to prosperity, from promises to measurable outcomes and from political competition to sustainable development.

“We must use this anniversary not only to celebrate how far we have come, but also to renew our collective determination to build an Osun State that works for all. The future of the state requires responsible leadership, active citizenship, accountability and sustained investment in human capital and infrastructure,” the union said.

The NUJ called on all stakeholders to work together in strengthening the state’s economy, improving social infrastructure, creating opportunities for young people and ensuring that the benefits of development reach communities across the state.

It wished the government and people of Osun State greater peace, unity, prosperity and inclusive development, while praying for an improved quality of life for all residents as the state begins another chapter in its history.

“Happy 35th anniversary to the government and good people of Osun State. May our dear state continue to grow in peace, unity and prosperity, and may the coming years bring greater development and opportunities for all,” the union added.
