Terror Surge: Tinubu Turns To UK For Urgent Security Backing
President Bola Tinubu has called for deeper security cooperation with the United Kingdom to confront escalating terrorism threats across West Africa, describing British support as “essential” to safeguarding regional stability.
Speaking at a state banquet hosted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle on Wednesday, Tinubu framed Nigeria’s security challenges within the broader instability emanating from the Sahel, where extremist groups continue to expand their reach.
“Our West African region faces complex terrorism challenges with roots in the Sahel. Nigeria carries an enormous responsibility to help safeguard regional stability,” the President said, signalling Abuja’s readiness to strengthen alliances in tackling insurgency.
He stressed that collaboration with the UK remains critical, noting that both nations share long-standing ties that extend beyond history into security, governance and institutional development.
Tinubu also disclosed plans to advance discussions with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on coordinated responses to security threats.
Tinubu used the occasion to reaffirm Nigeria’s commitment to regional peace, positioning the country as a frontline state in the fight against terrorism.
He suggested that enhanced intelligence sharing, military cooperation and strategic partnerships with the UK could play a decisive role in reversing the trend.
Beyond security, the Nigerian leader highlighted the broader bilateral relationship, pointing to shared democratic values, legal traditions and strong diaspora ties.
The UK, through its longstanding engagement in Africa and the Commonwealth, is seen as a key ally in supporting efforts to stabilise the region, particularly as threats linked to extremist networks continue to evolve.
