Police Reportedly Arrest Islamic Cleric Over Alleged Defamatory Publications Against ACADIP President
A controversial Islamic cleric, Jamiu Adegunwa, has been arrested by the police over alleged defamatory publications against the President of ACADIP, Mallam Yusuf Adepoju.
Adegunwa was reportedly arrested in Oyo State after allegedly evading series of arrest and failing to appear before a Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State.
The cleric is accused of libelous publications from July 6 2021 till date, alleged to have caused injury, insult, hatred, enmity and damage to the reputation and character of the complainant, Mallam Yusuf Adepoju and members of his family.
According to the prosecution Mr J. Oyetunji, the cleric allegedly used his social media platform, Al-Madrasatu Wahabiya, to publish defamatory contents against the ACADIP president, his organisation and members of his family for reasons yet to be established.
” Something in 2022, he instituted a suit against the Inspector-General of Police and the then AIG of Zone 11, seeking ₦500 million in damages before the Federal High Court, Lagos.
” The case was eventually decided in favour of the Police, and subsequent court orders directed that he be arrested.”
The case brought before the Federal High Court in Osogbo in Charge No. FHC/OS/86C/2025, but refused to obey the court order where he is facing a one-count charge bordering on the alleged defamatory publications.
The court had ordered for his arrest to face trial for alleged defamatory statements against ACADIP.
The prosecution alleged that the offence contravenes Sections 24(1)(a) and (b) and 24(2)(a) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015.
The matter is expected to proceed in accordance with the court’s schedule for June 15 2025.
