Independence: Nigeria Will Overcome, Keep Hope Alive — Prof Olagoke Urges Nigerians
The Founder and Spiritual Head of Shafaudeen-in-Islam Worldwide, Wakajaye, Ibadan, Professor Sabit Ariyo Olagoge JP, has felicitated with Nigerians on the occasion of the country’s 66th Independence anniversary, urging citizens to keep hope alive.
In his Independence Day message made available to newsmen on Wednesday, the revered Islamic cleric described independence as a reminder of the courage, sacrifice and resilience of Nigeria’s founding fathers.
“Independence is not just a date in history; it is a reminder of the courage, sacrifice and resilience of our forebears who fought to give us a sovereign and united nation. Their dream was a Nigeria built on justice, equity, unity and progress, a dream we must all continue to pursue,” Prof. Olagoge said.
He noted that although Nigeria is passing through challenging times, the nation’s current difficulties are not the end of its story, stressing that the country remains richly blessed with human and natural resources.
According to him, the anniversary calls for sober reflection, renewed patriotism and collective responsibility.
“This is a time for sober reflection, renewed patriotism and collective responsibility. We must close ranks as a people, eschew divisive sentiments, and work together to build the Nigeria of our dreams,” he stated.
The Islamic scholar commended the resilience of Nigerians at home and in the diaspora, urging them to continue praying for leaders, supporting good governance, and contributing their quota to national development.
Prof. Olagoge, however, charged leaders at all levels to be more proactive in tackling the twin challenges of insecurity and poverty bedeviling the nation, saying no meaningful development can thrive in an atmosphere of fear and hardship.
He also called on government, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and all stakeholders to ensure that the 2027 general elections are free, fair, credible and transparent, in order to deepen democracy and strengthen public trust in the nation’s electoral process.
“I am confident that with unity, sincerity of purpose and commitment to nation-building, Nigeria shall overcome and take its rightful place among the comity of great nations,” he added.
Prof. Olagoge prayed for peace, unity and prosperity for Nigeria, wishing all Nigerians a happy Independence celebration.
