Coalition Warns Osun APC Against Disrupting Local Government Elections

The Coalition of Civil Society Groups for Good Governance has issued a stern warning to the Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other desperate actors against any plans to disrupt the forthcoming local government elections in the state.

The group also condemned the spread of false alarms and deliberate misrepresentation of judicial matters surrounding the proposed elections, calling for political maturity and respect for the rule of law.
In a statement released on Monday and signed on behalf of the group, by Comrade Azeez Opeyemi, the coalition expressed concerns over what it described as the APC’s desperate attempts to thwart the democratic process.
It noted that such moves undermine the Supreme Court’s ruling, which mandates that all local governments in Nigeria must be governed by democratically elected leadership.
The coalition emphasized that any attempt to obstruct the election is a direct assault on democracy and the people’s right to choose their local leaders.
The group commended Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, for his unwavering commitment to grassroots governance.
It praised his administration for providing the necessary support to the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) in its preparation for the elections. According to the coalition, Governor Adeleke’s stance aligns with the constitutional and democratic ideals that prioritize the people’s voice in governance at all levels.
Furthermore, the coalition lauded the people of Osun State for their resilience and democratic spirit.
It urged them to remain vigilant and reject any calls by desperate politicians seeking to destabilize the state ahead of the election. The group reaffirmed that democracy thrives when citizens actively participate in the electoral process without fear of intimidation or undue interference.
As Osun State moves closer to the local government elections, the coalition called on security agencies to ensure a peaceful and transparent process.
It also reminded all political actors to embrace the principles of fair competition and to desist from any actions that could threaten peace and stability in the state.
“The upcoming local government elections represent a crucial step toward strengthening democracy in Osun State, and all stakeholders must work together to ensure a free, fair, and credible process.” the statement concluded.
