A yet-to-be-identified student of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, tragically lost his life on Monday in an auto crash that occurred during celebrations marking the completion of final examinations.

The incident happened on 8 December 2025 at Ujoelen Junction along the Ekpoma–Auchi expressway, where a motorcade of fresh AAU graduates had taken to the road following their signing-out activities.

According to eyewitness accounts, the group of students engaged in high-spirited celebrations without observing basic safety precautions.

The deceased reportedly attempted to overtake a moving truck at high speed when he collided with a stationary vehicle parked by the roadside.

The Edo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Cyril Mathew, confirmed the accident, stating that one student died on the spot while five others sustained varying degrees of injury and were rushed to hospital for treatment.

“The students, after writing their last paper, entered the road in a convoy. In the process, one of them overtook another vehicle and rammed into a stationary truck,” Mathew explained.

He urged students of higher institutions to celebrate responsibly and within safe environments, stressing the importance of caution during such festivities.

“There is life after graduation,” he said, advising young people to prioritise safety over risky displays of excitement.

The incident has cast a shadow over what should have been a day of joy for the AAU graduating students and the university community.
