Tragedy As Heap Of Sand Crushes 11 Workers To Death At Block Factory
The spate of tragedies across the country has continued in Kaduna with the death of 11 people at a local block making site in Yar-doka Village, Damau District, Kubau Local Government Area of the state.
The victims were working at the block site when the heap of sand they were working with suddenly gave way, burying them under its weight, Kaduna Police Command spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan said on Wednesday.
According to him, the Village Head of Yar-doka, Alhaji Lawal Damau reported the tragic incident to the Police on Tuesday’s afternoon.
“It was to the effect that sand had caved in at a local block site, resulting in the deaths of 11 individuals, with several others sustaining injuries.”
The Police spokesperson also confirmed that seven people who were injured when the sand caved in are currently receiving treatment at the Primary Health Centre in the village.
According to him, the cause of the incident is still under investigation, adding that the concerned authorities are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
“The local government and state authorities had been informed, and further developments would be communicated as the investigation unfolds.
“This tragic incident highlights the importance of ensuring that safety measures are put in place at construction sites to prevent such accidents in the future.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the deceased and those affected by this devastating tragedy,” Hassan said.
The tragedy in Kaduna followed death of over 150 people in Mokwa, Niger State as a result of flood disaster last Wednesday.
Also, 11 athletes from Kano died as they were returning to their state after participating in the National Sports Festival some days ago.
In the same vein, more than 30 people were reportedly killed by armed herdesmen in parts of Benue State in the early part of the week.
