Students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan came out in large numbers on Tuesday to protest against Governor Seyi Makinde’s decision to rename their school after a former governor, the late Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo.

The protest caused heavy traffic as students blocked the entrance gates of the institution and the busy Sango-Eleyele Road in Ibadan, Oyo State. Many commuters, residents, and travellers were stranded. Some staff members were also unable to enter the school.

Governor Makinde had a few days ago renamed The Polytechnic, Ibadan to Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, Ibadan. Dr. Olunloyo was the first Ibadan native to serve as governor of the old Oyo State, ruling from October to December 1983.

The Oyo State Road Transport Management Agency (OYTMA) advised motorists to take other routes due to the blockage.

In a statement by its Executive Chairman, Maj. Adekoya (Rtd.), the agency urged drivers heading towards Eleyele, Apete, Ijokodo, and nearby areas from Sango and vice versa to use Dugbe, Mokola, or Ajibode routes to avoid delays.

OYTMA asked all road users to remain calm, obey traffic officers, and follow diversion signs until the roads are clear again.
