Edo Govt Approves ₦75,000 Minimum Wage, Effective Immediately

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, has approved a new minimum wage of ₦75,000 for workers in the state, effective immediately as of Thursday, May 1, 2025.
The announcement, made during a Workers’ Day address in Benin City, marks an increase from the ₦70,000 minimum wage implemented by the previous administration under Governor Godwin Obaseki.

The adjustment aims to enhance workers’ welfare amid rising economic challenges and inflation. The new wage applies to all state civil servants and permanent EdoSTAR teachers, ensuring broader coverage across public sector employees.

The decision follows Okpebholo’s earlier commitment to workers’ welfare, evidenced by his approval of five months’ salary arrears for Edo State Polytechnic staff in April 2025, aligned with the then N70,000 minimum wage.

The increment to N75,000 was described as a response to consultations with labour unions and economic realities, aiming to boost morale and productivity. The Edo State Government emphasised that the wage hike reflects the administration’s “Renewed Hope for a Rising Edo” agenda, with plans to sustain timely salary payments.

Labour leaders, including the Edo State Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) chairman, have welcomed the move, noting it positions Edo among states with competitive minimum wages, though some urged clarity on implementation timelines and arrears adjustments.

The policy builds on Okpebholo’s recent governance reforms, including civil service employment of 360 personnel in January 2025, all transitioned to the N70,000 wage at the time.
