Ogbomoso Shooting: Oyo Police Arrest, Detain Officers

The Oyo State Police Command has declared that it had arrested and detained some officers involved in the Monday shooting of an ex-student of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, and killing of one Damilola Iyanda, at a club in Ogbomoso.

The command made the declaration in a statement made available to New Telegraph on Thursday by its Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso (SP).

Iyanda was allegedly killed by a policeman identified as Inspector Rasheed Saheed. Two others were also injured during the incident.

Osifeso in the statement said “Saheed and other officers involved in the shooting have been detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku, Ibadan”.

He added that the Commissioner of Police has ordered that the case be taken up by the Homicide Department of the State Criminal Investigation Department with the Deputy Commissioner of Police directly in charge of the investigations

The statement read: “The Oyo State Police Command wishes to clear the air about the unfortunate shooting incident that occurred on Monday 22/4/2024 at about 0130hrs around a popular Night Club along, “Under G” Area, Owode-Ogbomoso resulting in the demise of Iyanda Damilola, ‘m’.

“Investigation report reveals that during the early hours of the same date and time, a distress call was received by Operatives of the Command’s Monitoring Unit stationed within Ogbomoso through the Director of a popular Night Club within the axis, requesting for immediate intervention and protection from rampaging suspected student cultists who were at the time harassing guests and destroying club property.

“In a swift response to the call by the Club Director, a team of officers led by one Insp Rasheed Saheed arrived at the scene. The fracas worsened as deliberate efforts were made by the suspected cultists to prevent the Police from further gaining access into the crime scene while shots were allegedly fired from different angles including from the intervening officers who fired warning shots to disperse onlookers.

“The incident recorded the death of one Iyanda Damilola, ‘m’, and the injury of his brother, one Iyanda Femi Israel who has since been discharged from the hospital after treatment. Worthy of note is that the CP has ordered that the case be taken up by the Homicide Department of the State Criminal Investigation Department with the Deputy Commissioner of Police directly in charge of the investigations.

“All the Operatives involved in the incident including Inspr Rasheed Saheed are currently under detention at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku. Lastly, the Oyo State Police Command assures members of the public particularly the Student Community of the swift dispensation of Justice,” the statement read.

The dead victim, not LAUTECH student, Management

Meanwhile, the management of LAUTECH has issued a statement of clarification and information regarding the incident which some sections of the media reported as having taken place on the campus of the University.

According to a release signed by Dr. Kayode Ogunleye, Registrar, on behalf of Ag Vice Chancellor, Prof R. O. R. Kalilu, made available to New Telegraph, “the University Management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, has taken the time to find out the true position of things on the fracas that led to shooting that took place outside the university on April 23, 2024. It is on this basis that the university is making this release.

The university management has been able to confirm that an ex-student of the university, Iyanda Femi Israel, who is a graduate of the Department of Management and Accounting, sustained a gun shut injury during the incident that occurred in a club outside the university and was immediately rushed to the hospital.

“Furthermore, information made available to the Management confirmed that the person who was reportedly shot dead was neither a student nor graduate of the university.

“Since the occurrence of the incident, appropriate government agencies have swung into action to investigate the matter and take appropriate actions. While commiserating with friends and family of the deceased, the University Management reiterates her commitment to the safety and welfare of staff and students.

“Meanwhile, necessary actions are already being taken to monitor the health of the injured ex-student. Staff and students are hereby enjoined to maintain the peace on the campus while going about their lawful business. With best wishes of the Ag Vice Chancellor, Prof R. O. R. Kalilu”.
