CityMirrorNews Today In History: Late Fela Anikulapo Kuti In Black Maria
The Afro-beat musician, Fela Kuti in a Black Maria after being arrested on charges of illegally attempting to export £1,600 in foreign currency abroad by the then Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Military Government in 1984.
Fela was arrested 200 times by different military regimes for different charges and would later regain freedom.
But for that charges,the Afro-beat legend could not scale through the litigations as he was sentenced by a military tribunal to five years’ imprisonment, on what he always insisted were trumped-up currency charges.
Fela was released in 1986 after General Ibrahim Babangida came to power.
