The notorious Rapid Response Squad (RRS) unit of the Ekiti State Police Command, acting on the orders of the immediate former state governor, Kayode Fayemi, has detained the Welfare Officer of the Ekiti State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr. Tope Bankole.

Bankole was arrested by RRS operatives during the weekend following a petition by Fayemi accusing him of “cyberstalking and criminal character assassination.”

The lecturer had accused the former governor of mismanaging N8 billion ecological funds belonging to the state.

He allegedly posted the allegation on a closed WhatsApp Group, “EKSU JKF Forum”.

“The news flying around that ex gov Fayemi left the withheld 3 months EKSU subvention in state account is false. The former governor swept Ekiti account clean before he left office,” Bankole had posted.

“He has enrolled for crash course at Oxford University where he will have enough time to invest his swept Ekiti funds. So much for people that called themselves progressives.”

SaharaReporters learnt that the ASUU executive has been in detention since he was arrested by RRS operatives.

The notorious police unit in Ekiti has been accused of unlawful killings, arrests, conversion of suspects’ property to personal use, and demand for outrageous amounts of money in exchange for people’s freedom.

The commander of the unit, CSP Marcus Ogundola is also known to be an ally of ex-governor Fayemi.

“They are cashing out big time with police uniform by extorting the youths of Ekiti State in the name of chasing ‘Yahoo boys’ (Internet fraudsters). The OC RRS, CSP Marcus Ogundola drives one of the latest Benz in town, GLK to be precise,” a resident had told SaharaReporters.

“He was in the news during the bye-election that was bloody in Omuo-Ekiti earlier this year. He was inside the same vehicle that brought those thugs that killed a woman and three others.

“He works for Governor Kayode Fayemi, not the Nigeria Police Force. He was the former OC SARS (Special Anti-Robbery Squad), Ekiti State before the #EndSARS protest. That SARS unit was not disbanded in Ekiti because it is the same set of people that formed the new RRS now.

“When he was the OC SARS, he had Ogindan, aka White lion as his 2ic; Deji, aka DJ SARS; One Iku Raymond, Omo Ode; a policewoman, Catherine, aka Iya Eji, Chief and Omo Oba. All these names and appellations were for his guys when SARS was still functioning but guess what, they are all working with him at the RRS unit.

“Even the Commissioner of Police dares not caution him because he’s Fayemi’s loyal man. The same set of guys under SARS is still the same set of guys in RRS.

“The commissioner has no power over him because he was the one that took him to Fayemi when he first landed in Ekiti earlier last year. The RRS office has been moved out of police headquarters to Fountain Hotel along Iyin Road just because Fayemi wants Marcus Ogundola to be free to do what he likes.” SaharaReporters
