A university don, Dr Omojola Awosusi, has said that for tertiary institutions’ registry to be more effective, there is a need for training and retraining of staff and students on the utilisation of appropriate tools.

Dr Awosusi , who is the former Registrar, Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, stated this at the first Registry Annual Lecture, organised by Osun State University, UNIOSUN, on Tuesday.

According to the two term University Registrar, public institution should concentrate their tetfund allocations on acquisition of ICT infrastructures, EDMS softwares and training of staff and students on the utilisation of appropriate tools.

Dr Awosusi while speaking on the topic: “Building A Dynamic University Registry In A Changing World: The Imperative Of Migration Phoney ICT Literacy To e-governance”, further said that institutions should be allowed to deploy large online programmes which crowd of knowledge seekers would subscribe to and pay for, possibly in foreign currencies.

He added that teachers and administrators must be trained and re- trained to be suitable to coordinate the production, marketing and sales of the institutional products.

“Government should provide adequate e-government enabled facilities such as laying of optical fibers on each campus and linking every institution to the National Telecommunication grid.

“Nigeria cannot finance optimally its large number of universities and the universities cannot expect their registry to fly if the entire University is crawling. What we need is a synergistic and holistic approach to solve the problem of standard, quality and poverty in the Nigeria system.

“We should look at the University registry as a traditional University department which plays critical role of facilitation of the administration of the institution.

Speaking on the perception of the academics about University administrators, Dr Awosusi said over the years, academics have found it difficult to understand University Registry and the relevance of University.

He further said “that many Professors believed that administrators are too powerful and therefore the need to cut their wings. This views is drawn from the intellectual perception that anyone that does not possess a Ph.D degree is not educated enough to call the shots.

“Another worrisome argument against University professional administrators is the allegation of inefficiency, indolence and non-effectiveness. Many nowadays, write poorly and lack charisma to attract respect for themselves and the job.

“It has been observed that one of the challenges the university administration is clashing of the meetings. A disciplinary committee meeting in the Central administration may clash with faculty board and Professor has been invited for both.”

He however appreciated the register, Mr Gafar Adebayo and the school management for organising such a good programme.

Speaking, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Labode Popoola appreciated the guest lecturer for digging deep into the topic under discussion.
