The convener of IBI GIGA AMBASSADORS, Chief (Dr) Alex Ajipe has congratulated members of the newly inaugurated executive committee of Online Media Practitioners in Ondo state.

A statement by Ajipe’s Media Aide, Solomon Adewoye, however, urged the newly elected executive and media practitioners not to relent in promoting excellence in governance and the defence of the vulnerable worldwide.

He also charged the media to adhere strictly to the code of ethics to preserve the sanctity of the profession.

According to him, the election of Hakeem Adebumiti as chairman and other members of his team would open up new vistas for the practice of online journalism in Ondo state and Nigeria at large.

“I congratulates the new chairman Hakeem Adebumiti and other members of his team. I have the believe that the newly inaugurated executives are capable to rescue this profession from the abuse of social media. I therefore charged them to put more efforts to sanitize the new media space, especially to address churning out of fake news.

“In as much as Social Media is a tool to inform and educate people on the happenings in the society, it has, however, been abused by unscrupulous characters who, most times, blow issues out of proportion or indulge in outright falsehood to attract traffic.

“For me, it is time for media professionals to take over the Social Media space with the view to sanitize the sector and ensure that professionalism is brought to bear on the information being churned out to the people through the various social media platforms”

“We all understand that our country is currently facing security and economic challenge, I, therefore advised media houses to play a role in stabilising the peace and unity of our dear county,” Ajipe said.
