NANS Condemns Hike In Electricity Tariff
The National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) on Thursday said it condemns and rejects the recent hike in the electricity tariff, saying it was insensitive and ill-timed.
Mr Sunday Asefon, NANS President, gave the condemnation in Osogbo while speaking with journalists, saying the association came to the resolution after extensive deliberations on the recent electricity hike.
He said the tariff hike was ridiculous and unacceptable because it was coming barely two months after it was increased by over 100 percent.
“Other nations of the world are doing everything possible to ease the economic challenges occasioned by the COVID-19 on its citizens through various interventions and benefits, the Nigerian Government must not do the opposite.
“The 100 percent hike , which is barely two months ago is condemnable and this new over 50 percent hike is totally unacceptable.” he said
He called on National Electricity Regulatory Commission to reverse the hike adding that NANS would fight any hike in electricity tariff until prepaid metres are provided for every household.
He said the resolution of the Association would be pursued by all structures of NANS until the reversal of the hike in the price is implemented by the appropriate agencies of government.
On the issue of the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ (ASSU) strike, he said the Federal Government should find a lasting solution to the lingering matter, adding that the EndSARS protest would not have been effective if students were in school
