An Islamic scholar and teacher, Alhaja Lateefah Ajetunmobi has said that Hijab is a symbol of modesty, dignity and human’s shield against dangers.

She stated this during the Annual Sister’s Day, held at Onireke Mosque in Ikire, Osun State to commemorate the World Hijab Day.

The event was organized by students of the Osun State University under the banner of Muslim Students Society of Nigeria, MSSN, Saturday.

In her speech themed, “Better Awareness of Hijab; It’s Greater Understanding for a Peaceful World,” the scholar highlighted the two types of hijab: the inner hijab and the outer hijab.

The lecturer, who described the outer hijab as piety and Allah’s consciousness, also explained the varieties of outer headcover, which according to her, include hijab, jilbab, khymar and niqab respectively.

She noted that both forms of Hijab are Paramount to living a chaste life as a Muslimah thereby obeying the commandment of Allah and pleasing Him.

She added, “character and deen are two important virtue a Muslimah must have. Both are not mutually exclusive. Having Deen without character is faulty. You should all work on cultivating excellent characters. Let this exude in your inner hijab while complementing your outer hijab.”

“Allah (SWT) described the prophet (PBUH) based not on his religious obligations but on the basis of his excellent character. We should all strive be like Rosulullahi.

“It’s saddening that most of you are influenced by peer pressure. This has resulted in some removing your hijab. This is outrageous and utterly wrong. Hijab isn’t a necessity, it is compulsory for every Muslimah as ordained by Allah (SWT).

“I charge you all to seek Islamic knowledge. Your pursuit of formal education shouldn’t hold you back from learning more about the Deen. And in whatever you do, put Allah first.”

Reacting to the lecture, the Ameerah of the group, Aisha Bello stated that the objective of the event was “to commemorate the World Hijab Day, to sensitize the sisters about hijab, to create awareness about the importance of Hijab as well as to promote the spirit of unity, harmony and love among the female folks on campus.”

Thereafter, Aishat Adejumo, an 100 level student of the institution from the Department of Linguistics and Communication Studies emerged as the Lucky Sister and Queen of MSSN. She was showered with gifts such as veils, pack of underwear and undisclosed amount of money.
