Adeleke’s Death: MDCN Vindicates LAUTECH CMD On Alleged Medical Malpractice

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria has dismissed the allegations of professional misconduct and medical malpractice levelled against the Chief Medical Director of Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital (LAUTECH) in Osogbo, Professor Akeem Lasisi by the family of late Senator Isiaka Adeleke.

It will be recalled that following the sudden death of the former governor of Osun state, Senator Adeleke in 2017, his body was brought to LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Osogbo for autopsy.

A Coroner Inquest was set up by Osun State Government on the Adeleke’s death. The coroner revealed that the former governor died of overdose.

But not satisfied with the outcome of the Coroner’s verdict regarding the role of LAUTECH Teaching Hospital Osogbo on autopsy issue, the Adeleke family sent a petition to the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and accused Prof. Lasisi of gross professional misconduct and malpractice in the manner it issued the autopsy report.

Although, at the conclusion of the autopsy, it was gathered that a member of the deceased’s family, Mrs. Dupe Sanni wrote a “Certificate of Honour” to the hospital conveying the family’s satisfaction.

The Certificate of Honour reads: “on behalf of the Adeleke family, I, Mrs. Dupe Sanni hereby certify that the family is satisfied and hereby confirm our confidence in the pathology examination conducted by the pathologist in LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Osogbo on Senator Isiaka Adeleke.”

But in its letter Ref no: MD PIP/781/111 dated 11th May, 2018, signed by the Secretary of the Investigation Panel, Dr E. D. Abdu, MDCN said following consideration of petition deposed to on oath by the family of late Senator Adeleke and the counter affividavit by the CMD including autopsy report of the Senator, the Council came to the conclusion that no case of misconduct in a professional respect has been established against Professor Lasisi.

According to the MDCN, “The panel has come to a conclusion on the matter. The panel did not establish prima facie case of misconduct in a professional respect against you”.

Meanwhile, the leadership of the hospital has stated that all its services are in compliance with internationally acceptable practice.

According to a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the hospital, Mr. Ayodele Adeyemo, “the hospital will not deviate from medical ethos and ethics while it will constantly sustain credibility which it has acquired over the years.
“Members of the public are assured of continued patient-friendly services,” it added.
