Nigerian Journalists Cautioned On Negative Reportage Of Islam

Nigerian Journalists have been charged to seek knowledge  on teachings, norms and tenets of  Islam to avoid negative  reportage on Islamic religion.

Muslim Clerics, Dr Taofeeq Abdulhamid, the Chief Imam, Federal Polytechnic, Ede,  and Uztaz Musbaudeen Orimadegun, Osun State Polytechnic, Irée, made the charge on Tuesday at the annual Ramadan lecture of the Osun Council of Nigerian Union of Journalists,  held at the Press Centre, Osogbo.
The duo who are the guest lecturers opined that the media had enormous roles to play in keeping the society peaceful for human habitation and for businesses to flourish.

They said “ there is need for media practitioners to uphold the principle of objectivism in their reportage. Media play a vital roles in the promotion of peace and harmony in our society.
 “What goes out of the newsrooms are capable of making or marring the polity. Newsmen need to adopt diversity reportage in order not to overheat the polity.”

They explained that diversity reporting entails reflecting views of not only the people in authority, but also those of the followers.
“With diversity in our report, most of the social vices prevalent in the society will be nipped in the bud.
Enumerating qualities of a good journalists, the Islamic clerics said a journalists must be a good listener, saying they should do more of investigative reportage”.
In terms of affordability and accessibility, journalism remains the only thing that keeps alive the hope of Nigerians.
They therefore, enjoined journalists to be positive in their reportage for them to contribute to the development of the society, since the profession offers the cheapest way of getting justice through the court of public opinion.
