Senate Confirms 15 RECs, Says 12 Others Pending
Senate has confirmed the appointment of 15 Resident Electoral Commissioners of the Independent National Electoral Commission out of the twenty seven names submitted for screening and subsequent confirmation by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Chairman, Senate Committee on Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Senator Suleiman Nazif disclosed this on Thursday.
Senator Suleiman while presenting the committee’s reports at the plenary said all the fifteen nominees were cleared by the trio of Nigerian Police, Code of Conduct Bureau and Department of State Services.
According to the Committee the other twelve Nominees are still undergoing screening.
Those confirmed were Hussaini Haliru Pai from the Federal Capital Territory, FCT; Alhaji Ahmad Makama, Bauchi; and Sadiq Abubakar Musa, Kaduna who were reappointed.
Also confirmed as new RECS were Professor Godswill Obioma, Abia; Ibrahim Abdullahi, Adamawa; James Iorliam Apam, Benue; Dr. Nkwachukwu Orji, Ebonyi; Dr. Ilona Joseph Valentine Chuks, Enugu; Dr. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, Plateau; Umar Ibrahim, Taraba; Emeka Ononamadu Joseph, Imo; Obo O. Effanga, Cross River; Professor Francis Chukwuemeka Ezeonu, Anambra; Dr. Briyai O. Frankland, Bayelsa; and Agboke Mutiu Olaleke, Ogun.
SundiataPost recalls that President Muhammadu Buhari had on March 23, 2017, written to the Senate, requesting for the screening and subsequent confirmation of twenty- seven Resident Electoral Commissioners.
In his congratulated message, Senate President, Bukola Saraki tasked new Resident Electoral Commissioners to discharge their assignments with high sense of patriotism so as to further deepen democratic parties and improve the electoral processes.
It is also recalled that Senate had earlier suspended the screening processes for two weeks to protest President Buhari’s none compliance to the senate’s rejection of Mr. Ibrahim Magu as the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.h
