BUT for divine providence, a kidnapper who disguised as a scavenger, Usman Bello aged 34, would have succeeded in abducting an eight-year-old primary school girl at her parents’ residence in Akure Ondo State.

Reports had it that the victim, not knowing that danger was lurking around the house, went to the backyard to use the toilet when the kidnapper, disguised as a scavenger, beckoned on her.

Unknowingly, the little girl rushed to meet with him and after noticing that there was nobody in sight, the suspect reportedly hit the victim with a charm in a bid to hypnotise her.

Unfortunately for the suspect, the charm didn’t work on the victim whom he had hidden in a sack.

It was the cry of the little girl that attracted her grandmother who was busy watching television and preparing lunch inside the house.

In a confused state, the suspect, in an attempt to escape, attacked the victim’s grandmother and other neighbours who rushed out to rescue the victim.

The timely arrival of the personnel of the state security outfit codenamed, Amotekun, scuttled his attempt to escape arrest.

Her cry attracted her grandma —Father

Narrating how his daughter was rescued, the victim’s father, Bose James, said: “I was outside, washing my clothes and my mother was inside watching television.

“My little daughter, who is eight years old, came out and said that she wanted to use the toilet and I asked her to go to the backyard to do that.

“Her incessant cries attracted my mother’s attention, who went to the backyard and confirmed that an Aboki, whom we mistook for a scavenger had kidnapped and hidden her inside a sack.

“It was my mother’s shout for help that made me go to check what was going on. Before I got there, he had hit her with a heavy wood on her chest while she was struggling to rescue my child from him.

“The kidnapper continued to attack whoever attempted to rescue my child, but I held on to him, preventing him from escaping.

“It was a bike man who saw the scene and went to alert Amotekun Corps stationed at the Maronu area of Araromi Road. They swiftly arrived at the scene, rescued us and arrested the suspected kidnapper.”

James, however, commended the officers of the Corps for their swift response which, according to him, rescued all of them from the kidnapper.

He has confessed — Amotekun boss

Parading the suspect at their office, the state commander of Amotekun, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, confirmed that the suspected kidnapper “hit the little girl with a charm and immediately tuck her in a sack and was about leaving before nemesis caught up with him.

Adeleye said: “The suspect pretended as if he was a scavenger picking rubbles, but luckily, the grandmother of the child heard the cry of the girl and when they looked around, they saw somebody stepping away with the child inside the sack.

“So, when they raised the alarm, he attacked them with different objects including burning firewood he picked from a woman cooking nearby, but they were able to alert Amotekun operatives and he was arrested.

“Upon interrogation, we discovered that he is a kidnapper and he confessed that he has been in the trade for a while. Investigation continues on his case before we would finally hand him over to the court.

“We would like to know his sponsors, his bosses, what he did with the previous ones he had successfully taken away before his arrest.

“Luckily, the eight-year-old child is mentally okay and the grandmother, despite the degree of injury sustained, is equally responding to treatment from our health facility.”
