Ondo: Commotion As Suspected Phone Thief Beats Up Traditional Ruler
-Community Laments Sacrilege, Demands justice
There were shockwaves in the ancient town of Ogbagi-Akoko on Thursday morning, following a physical attack on the community’s revered traditional ruler, the Owa of Ogbagi, Oba Victor Adetona Ojo, by a suspected phone thief.
The shocking incident, which occurred at about 11:00 a.m., has sent ripples of fear, outrage, and disbelief across the community, raising serious concerns about security, respect for traditional institutions and the evolving social tensions within the area.
Eyewitness accounts and sources close to the palace described a chaotic and confusing scene as the monarch was allegedly beaten severely by the lone assailant, identified as Tope Adelani.
The attack, described by many residents as both brazen and sacrilegious, reportedly left the royal father with multiple injuries, forcing his immediate transfer to a private hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.
Initial reports suggest that the suspect was not an unfamiliar face at the palace, as a palace source who craved anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the incident told WEEKEND HOPE that Adelani was a frequent visitor to the palace, a detail that deepened the mystery surrounding the motive behind the attack.
What began as a seemingly ordinary day soon spiraled into an unprecedented breach of decorum and security.
Sources revealed that the suspect had allegedly gained access to the palace around 11:00 a.m.
During the visit, he allegedly stole the monarch’s mobile phone and left the premises unnoticed.
However, in a surprising turn of events, he reportedly returned shortly afterward during which the situation escalated dramatically.
While being questioned directly by Oba Ojo over the alleged theft, the suspect was said to have suddenly turned violent.
And in what witnesses described as a shocking and unprovoked assault, Adelani allegedly attacked the monarch, delivering series of blows that left the royal father visibly injured.
WEEKEND HOPE learnt that members of the monarch’s family who attempted to intervene were also reportedly assaulted in the ensuing melee.
The palace, usually a symbol of peace, authority and cultural pride, quickly descended into pandemonium as attendants, family members and visitors scrambled to contain the situation.
The suspect was eventually subdued and taken into police custody, but not before the damage had been done-both physically to the monarch and symbolically to the sanctity of the traditional institution.
As news of the attack spread through Ogbagi-Akoko and neighboring communities, reactions poured in from various quarters, with many expressing shock at what they described as an unthinkable act.
In the meantime, prayers and goodwill messages have continued to pour in from across the community and beyond, reflecting the deep respect and affection held for the royal father.
For many in Ogbagi-Akoko, the incident represents more than an isolated act of violence – it is a moment of collective reflection, which raises questions about societal values, the erosion of traditional respect and the responsibilities of both individuals and institutions in preserving cultural integrity.
As law enforcement agencies continue to investigate the incident, the people of Ogbagi-Akoko remain united in their condemnation of the attack and in their support for their monarch.
There is a shared hope that justice will not only be served but will also serve as a deterrent against future acts of disrespect toward traditional authority.
In the days ahead, attention will likely remain fixed on both the recovery of Oba Ojo and the outcome of police investigation.
For now, the palace stands quieter than usual – a stark reminder of the morning when its peace was violently broken, and a symbol of a community determined to heal, rebuild, and reaffirm the values that define it.
One resident aptly puts it, “A king is not just a man; he is the soul of the people. To touch him is to touch us all.”
